HOW TO RECOGNIZE WEARINESS

Brothers and sisters, don’t ever grow weary in doing what is right. 2 Thessalonians 3:13 (TPT)  How do you know when you’re weary?  Indifference can be one indication. Mental or emotional exhaustion can slowly extinguish a person’s fire for their spouse, their life or their future. Over time, that exhaustion turns into indifference as they begin to run out of steam.  Over the years, I’ve counselled many married couples. If they come in angry and fighting, I’ve found there’s usually lots of hope. But when they walk in and they’re already apathetic, it’s a different scenario. Indifferent people are often close to being finished.  Sarcasm also points toward weariness. We all know people who are quick on the draw with humorous comebacks or snappy remarks. …

WEARINESS IS A CHOICE

[Eleazar] arose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary and clung to the sword. 2 Samuel 23:10 (AMPC)  Weariness is a choice.  Does that surprise you? Let me explain. If you become physically tired from manual labour, you can take a break until your strength returns. But you can’t fix mental or emotional weariness that way because it is a mindset you choose to accept.  Second Samuel 23:9-10 records the story of one of David’s mightiest warriors, Eleazar. He stood together with David against the Philistines after the rest of the Israelite army retreated. Facing overwhelming odds, Eleazar refused to allow weariness into his head or his heart. How do we know? Today’s verse says he fought until his hand grew weary—not …

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE OF WEARINESS

I will catch up with him while he is weary and discouraged. He and his troops will panic, and everyone will run away.” 2 Samuel 17:2 (NLT)  Weariness can cause us to run away when we should stand firm. Today’s verse shows us some fascinating insight into the psychology around this.  In 2 Samuel 17, Absalom led a rebellious uprising against his father, King David. As David and his people fled Jerusalem, Absalom sought advice for his next military move from David’s disloyal advisor, Ahithophel. Even at this time in history, people understood psychological warfare. That’s why Ahithophel advised Absalom to attack David’s entourage while they were still physically tired from their escape discouraged.  Ahithophel understood that people make the worst decisions and are the …

ONE CAUSE OF WEARINESS

So David and his men continued down the road, and Shimei kept pace with them on a nearby hillside, cursing and throwing stones and dirt at David. 2 Samuel 16:13 (NLT)  Weariness is exhaustion that wears us down mentally and emotionally. But what causes it? In 2 Samuel 16, we find an interesting key to this topic buried within the story. David’s son, Absalom, mounted an insurrection to kill him and take over the leadership of Israel. Rather than fight his own son, David and his men escaped Jerusalem and moved to a protected location.  As they passed by a village, an angry man named Shimei came out and ran alongside them. He continually cursed David while chucking rocks and handfuls of dust at him …

THE BATTLE IS TO MAKE YOU WEARY

He will speak words against the Most High [God] and wear down the saints of the Most High… Daniel 7:25 (AMP)  Have you ever felt weary? I’m not talking about physical exhaustion, a good night’s sleep can cure tiredness, but weariness is different. It goes beyond fatigue and affects us emotionally. And when emotionally or mentally drained, people can begin to make unwise decisions.   Weariness can cause people to give up on their dreams, quit their marriages or take their own lives. It can shut down people’s hope and creativity until they’re just going through the motions of existing. The signs of emotional exhaustion were never more visible than during the pandemic.   We must recognize that we have an enemy on this planet whose goal …
