For in Christ, neither our most conscientious religion nor disregard of religion amounts to anything. What matters is something far more interior: faith expressed in love. Galatians 5:4-6 (MSG)
As believers, we don’t need to try to make anything up to God. That’s old covenant thinking, and we need to remind ourselves that we’re living under a new agreement.
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they separated all mankind from a relationship with God. But God promised to send a Saviour who would provide a way to get back into a close relationship with Him.
Years later, as God was putting things in place to send Jesus, He made a contract with the Israelites that we refer to as the “Old Covenant.” In this agreement, God promised a limited relationship with Him and access to His blessings IF they obeyed Him, but it wasn’t meant to be a permanent solution. People striving in just their own strength were trapped in endless cycles of failure and attempts to make up for those failures…that is, until God cut a new covenant with them.
This new contract, which we call the “New Covenant,” occurred between Jesus and God. Basically, God said: “Jesus if you will pay the penalty for mankind’s disobedience, I promise to bless and restore my relationship with people through you. When people trust in you and what you accomplished through your death, resurrection and ascension, I’ll forgive them and look at them as though they have your perfect record.”
If you’ve received Jesus as your Saviour, nothing is standing between you and a close, loving relationship with your Father God. You can ask Him for what you need knowing that your deservedness is irrelevant. Jesus deserves whatever you’re asking God for, so you’re entitled to it through Him!
