You Have Three Voices

Leon FontaineDevoted

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. Romans 8:5 (NKJV)

Within every decision you make, you must choose which voice to follow:

  1. Your mind. This is the voice of logic and reasoning. Your brain is an amazing computer but it was not designed to lead your life.
  2. Your flesh. Being controlled by the flesh means you let your feelings, desires and body dictate your actions. You become ruled by self-serving activities. “Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter].(Romans 8:6, AMPC).
  3. Your spirit. When you are listening to your spirit, you can tune in to God’s still small voice. “But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever].(Romans 8:6, AMPC).

After deciding to trust in Jesus, Holy Spirit can lead you because He lives in you. As you listen, Holy Spirit radiates wisdom into your mind and calm your emotions.

If you follow your spirit, it doesn’t require you to give up on intellectual or emotional growth. You will enjoy life more and have an even more brilliant mind. The difference is that you make decisions based on spirit, not mind or emotion. In fact, all three voices work best when spirit is first.

As you face decisions, don’t decide based on emotions or rationalization. Instead, renew your mind with the Word, put your spirit in lead position and consult Holy Spirit. He will “take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is” (John 16:12-15, MSG).
