But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Romans 8:9 (NKJV)
Over the past few days we’ve talked about four false mirrors we rely on to tell us who we are. We o en look to our memories, others’ opinions, our performance or legalistic religious teaching to determine who we are, but these sources are unreliable. These mirrors lie to us and, because they give us a false sense of self, they limit us.
For example, if you rely on others’ opinions as your mirror, you’ll focus on all the negative things people have ever said to you. Pretty soon you’ll start to live out this belief about who you are. It’s like having faith in the negative.
If all you do is look into those inaccurate mirrors, even though you’ve become a new creation in Christ, you’ll walk out a life that represents the old you. You need to keep looking into the true mirror—the Bible—and if you do, it has a powerful effect on you. You will begin to take on the habits and behaviours of who you see in that mirror!
Stop looking at your past to de ne you. Stop looking to your friends and coworkers. Stop looking at your accomplishments and your religious upbringing. Look to the right mirror—God’s Word—and you’ll gain the power to deal with bad habits and stinking thinking.
Over the next few days we’re going to talk about some specific things to look for as you gaze into the mirror of God’s Word. As you keep looking into the right mirror, you will begin to become what you see—not in your own power, but in God’s power!
