Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies, for [Your words] are ever before me. I have a better understanding and deeper insight than all my teachers, because Your testimonies are my meditation. Psalm 119:97–99 (AMPC)
When I was young, I never dreamed I would become a pastor. Actually, I was very opposed to the idea. So, when I felt that God was leading me in that direction, I had a few questions for Him. And, because I was only 19 years old, I really questioned whether or not anyone would want to listen to what I had to say.
At that time, God led me to a few verses that still stick with me today. For example, Psalm 119:97–99 taught me that if I would study God’s Word, He would make me wise beyond my years. If I could draw on His wisdom and the wisdom of other people, I wouldn’t have to wait for experience to teach me.
We need to go after wisdom, but it’s not hard to find if we’re willing to look for it. According to Proverbs 1, wisdom is crying out in the streets. Although we have much to gain from experience, wisdom calls out to us from the Bible and the people God puts around us.
For example, I don’t have to lose a marriage to learn how to keep one. I don’t have to go bankrupt to learn solid financial principles. I can study God’s Word for a great relationship and learn how to be wise with money. I can read books written by experts on these topics and ask questions of people I know who have more experience than I do.
