We all experience twinges of guilt when we do wrong. However, lingering, tormenting guilt and condemnation is the work of the devil.
When you feel like you are being plagued with defeating thoughts, you hate life and yourself…that’s not the work of Holy Spirit. It may seem like those thoughts are coming from God. After all, they have an element of truth to them. You know that you have done things that are wrong and you feel bad for it. But God is not condemning you.
Some believers listen to the voice of Satan all day long…and the worst part is they accept the condemnation coming at them because they think it’s from God. In fact, Revelation 12:10 names him the “accuser of our brethren” (KJV).
It’s the devil who wants to kill any expectation for laughter and joy in you by making you see only problems. He will use whatever he can to get you down, defeated and stuck. In fact, 2 Corinthians 11:14 tells us that Satan masquerades as an angel of light. Think about it: Satan even quoted scripture to Jesus.
When he did, Jesus threw the Word right back at him. When you feel condemned, you can calmly shoot back things like: “I am a child of God!” (Romans 8:16); “I am right with God because of Jesus!” (2 Corinthians 5:21); and “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” (Philippians 4:13)
Don’t worry about getting the words just right. Standing against the devil’s attacks isn’t complicated. James 4:7 tells you to simply “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
