In the same way that nursing infants cry for milk, you must intensely crave the pure spiritual milk of God’s Word. For this “milk” will cause you to grow into maturity, fully nourished and strong for life. 1 Peter 2:2 (TPT)
God’s Word is spiritual nourishment.
Physical nourishment and mental stimulation are both important, however our spirit grows from the revelations we find as we dig into God’s Word.
God’s Word feeds our spirit like milk nourishes babies; it helps us thrive, fuelling us from the inside out. Whether you’re a seasoned or new believer, the source and result of spiritual nourishment is the same. The more you “chew” on God’s Word daily, the more it feeds your spirit. However, your spiritual growth depends on whether or not you begin to grasp the truths in God’s Word.
Words on a page won’t spur on growth, but the revelation and understanding of what God’s telling you will. Your spiritual life won’t grow without the understanding component. That’s why studying God’s Word and increasing in your understanding of God’s truth is so critical to growth.
Psalm 119:13 says, The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand (NLT). In this verse we see that King David recognized the teaching of God’s Word helped illuminate his understanding of it.
If I’m seeking growth in a particular area, I’ll work on digesting teachings on that topic in Scripture. I’ll pick up a good book that teaches His Word, listen to the lyrics of music that feeds me God’s truths, or watch videos online of respected pastors teaching from His Word.
The only way to grow spiritually is by learning, understanding and applying more of God’s Word. It brings a peace, joy, love and faith that you don’t want to be without!
