Watch Your Tongue

Leon FontaineDevoted

Don’t you see, you planned evil against me but God used those same plans for my good, as you see all around you right now—life for many people. Genesis 50:20–21 (MSG)

When you go through a tough time, it’s really important to watch what you say.

Proverbs 18:21 says your tongue has the power of life and death in it. In other words, what you say has the power to bring life or bring death to a situation. This is why it is so important to speak positively, even when everything seems to be going wrong.

There’s a story in the Bible that illustrates this point well. Before John the Baptist was born, an angel appeared to his dad, Zacharias, to tell him he was going to have a son. The trouble is, Zacharias didn’t believe him (Luke 1:18).

What was the angel’s reaction? He replied, Because you won’t believe me, you’ll be unable to say a word until the day of your son’s birth (v. 20).

You see, God couldn’t afford to have Zacharias speaking words of doubt and unbelief over this situation. John the Baptist was to prepare the way for Jesus, and if Zacharias wasn’t going to be on board, it was better that he say nothing at all!

Now, God won’t strike you mute today. New Testament times are different, but this is something you need to do yourself. Stop speaking negatively and start speaking faith-filled words!

If you’re going through a tough time, think of today’s verse and say, “Father, thank you that Your plans for me are always good. Even when others plot evil against me, You use those same plans for my good, and for the good of everyone around me.”
