Two Minds

[For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides]. James 1:8 (AMPC)

In life, some are focused on themselves completely—their needs and the needs of their family alone. Others are focused on God. Then again, some seem to vacillate back and forth between the two.

They worry about their future, so when they pray, they do it from a place of fear, not faith. James 1:8 calls this having “two minds.” It causes you to be “unstable and unreliable and uncertain  about everything” that you think, feel and decide. But you do not have to live this way.

Choose faith by setting your mind on God’s Word. When you learn God’s Word, you can use its words to replace doubt-filled, fearful thoughts. For example, the thought, “Why would God care about my situation?” can be immediately interrupted by saying: “God cares about me. The Bible says that He loves me with such careful thought that He even knows the number of hairs on my head” (Matthew 10:30).

As you bring God’s Word in by studying it, focusing on it and listening to the teaching about it, ask Holy Spirit to help you believe. Like the man in Mark 9 who brought his son to Jesus to be healed, you can pray “help my unbelief!” (verse 24). In the Amplified version, this verse says “[Constantly] help my weakness of faith!” God knows you will struggle to keep doubt-filled thoughts at bay. Ask Him today and He will help you believe!
