Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 (NKJV)
Our society enables us to be more socially isolated than ever before, making many people hungry for friendship.
When you think of it, we’ve gone through a radical culture change over the past few decades. Older houses were built with a front porch instead of a back deck. In the evening you could stroll down your street and find several neighbours sitting on their front swing, inviting friendly conversation. Today face-to-face social interaction has to be more intentional.
If you struggle to make friends even though you put in the effort, there are several possible reasons why. Today we will cover three:
1. Forgive. When hurt, we tend to keep people at arm’s length to protect ourselves. As difficult as it may be, choose to forgive. Protect yourself from unsafe people, of course, but by forgiving you set yourself free to develop new, healthy relationships.
2. Open up. Many fear that others will discover their faults and flaws. Realistically, we all have stuff! True friends will accept you for who you are.
3. Step out. If you are not careful, you will develop such a strict routine that nothing can derail you from it, leaving no room to live an exciting life. Get a little unpredictable. Step out of your comfort zone and take a risk!
God has relationships in store for you that will make life amazing! Who can you get to know today?
