I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel…. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you…. Worship God!”
Revelation 22:8–9
Do you ever think about angels and wonder what they’re all about?
When you compare cartoon renditions or cute little Christmas angel statues to the biblical stories about these heavenly beings, the pictures just don’t line up. So let’s tackle a few common misconceptions about angels.
On the top of the list is something we really need to be careful about. In our quest to understand angels, we need to make sure we don’t misunderstand a very key point. Here it is in a nutshell:
Our focus needs to be on Jesus, not angels.
“Why do a series on angels then?” you might ask. Well, since we can read a lot about angels in the Bible, God must want us to understand them and their role in our lives. At the same time, we need to understand that as incredible as these heavenly beings can be, they are not to distract us from building a relationship with Jesus. He’s our main focus.
It’s easy to become enamoured with angels and want to seek out angelic encounters, but this can be a risky endeavour. You see, not all “angelic” appearances are God-inspired. We have to be discerning. As believers, we don’t need to be afraid. We have Christ in us who is greater than Satan or any of his followers, but we do need to stay balanced in our study of angels.
Angels are incredible, but always remember that they were created by an even more incredible God. As we continue to learn about angels, let’s remember to be in awe of how amazing God is!
