Often, I find Christians hunting for the supernatural in the spectacular and missing God altogether. A lot of the charismatic church movement shifted many believers toward thinking God is found solely in the dramatic: that everything must be goosebumps, great balls of fire and clouds of smoke. If that isn’t happening, then they think God must not be in it.
But with that belief, we miss out on noticing God operating in our routine, everyday lives. We fail to see Him quietly at work in our menial tasks and simple conversations because they’re not flashy. If we only look for God in the astonishing, I believe we’ll miss the supernatural almost every time.
God has no problem with showing up or working in magnificent ways. However, our purpose is not to sit around looking for God’s guidance via spectacular signs. The truth is, God talks to us constantly, even during mundane tasks like changing diapers and sweeping floors. Rather than fixate on finding God in a miraculous, breathtaking experience, listen for His quiet, gentle voice leading you daily.
Sure, there are no fireworks as you prepare Sunday school crafts for kids, problem-solve with creative ideas or manage your business budget efficiently. But keep your eyes open to see God at work every day, and I believe you’ll see the supernatural at work in your life.
