The Key to Freedom

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
1 John 4:18
Over the last few days we’ve been talking about how important it is to focus on God’s love for us. In fact, focusing on Jesus and understanding his love has the power to remove fear and anxiety, and it even has the ability to help us overcome addictions.
So many people think that to overcome addiction, you just need more willpower. While willpower is important, it’s not the only tool we have.
If you only rely on willpower, it becomes a battle of strength. When willpower is stronger, you move away from the addiction. But on days when the temptation seems stronger, you give in. The problem in this approach is that the focus is always on the addiction. And the more we think about what tempts us, the more we magnify its control over us.
I’m not saying that you ignore addiction. You need to be aware of what tempts you so you can stay away from it. That’s using wisdom. But at the same time, it can’t be your main focus.
We need to get our focus on Jesus. When we focus on Jesus, his love for us and his power and ability within us, it changes us on the inside. Our desires begin to change, our love for him grows and we begin to want to live his way. He empowers us to rise above it all!

What are you focusing on? You can focus on Jesus and his love for you, and move toward freedom, healing, confidence, joy and peace!
