THE BENEFITS OF GROWING UP

For as these qualities are yours and are increasing [in you as you grow toward spiritual maturity], they will keep you from being useless and unproductive in regard to the true knowledge and greater understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ.  2 Peter 1:8 (AMP)

Have you wanted to mature in your faith but aren’t sure how? The best way to grow up spiritually is to stay in God’s Word. And growth and maturity come with all kinds of benefits!

Mature believers often carry wisdom and discernment and aren’t easily led astray by religious ideas. I’ve occasionally had people tell me, “I don’t see God’s anointing flowing enough in the church. People aren’t falling in the aisles or speaking in tongues.” I understand some believers adhere to particular ideas about church. However, what is viewed as a problem often stems from a lack of maturity in the Word.

For instance, what would indicate that the presence or anointing of God is flowing somewhere? Wouldn’t it be witnessing salvations every week, seeing marriages restored, bodies healed and minds set free?

Second Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV) says, “Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” So the more we grow well-rounded and mature in the Word of God, the better we understand Him, hear Him, and the less we get tangled in religious weeds.

As today’s verse puts it, growing toward spiritual maturity will keep us from being useless and unproductive. In other words, meditating in God’s Word not only builds our faith, but develops us in every other area. Together, it all works to keep us effective and bearing fruit for God’s Kingdom. What better way to live?
