Thankful For Everything?

Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (MSG)

When you read today’s verse, it may not seem realistic at first. Can we really be cheerful ALL the time? Do we have to thank God for everything?

No, we don’t give thanks for everything that happens. We live in a world that is far from perfect and terrible things happen. God doesn’t send bad things our way so He certainly doesn’t expect us to thank Him for them.

Several other versions of the Bible translate this verse to say that we should give thanks “in everything,” meaning that even if you’re in the midst of a crisis, you can find something you’re grateful for. But even more importantly, you can thank Him for the answer to your requests… in advance. Knowing that God is always for you causes you to be grateful ahead of time.

No matter what you’re facing, making a list of the little things you are thankful for can help you get through. It is also important to demonstrate your gratitude. Thankfulness needs to be expressed. Tell your spouse and kids why you’re grateful for them. Find little things you’re thankful for every day—a good cup of coffee at work, a warm meal at home, or even a driver letting you cut in during busy traffic are all good opportunities to express thanks.

If you are facing an extremely difficult time in your life right now, know that God loves you immeasurably. He even has the hairs on your head numbered. You can know with confidence that He always hears your prayers and is ready and willing to help.
