Strip It Off And Put It On

And have clothed yourselves with the new [spiritual self], which is [ever in the process of being] renewed and remolded into [fuller and more perfect knowledge upon] knowledge after the image (the likeness) of Him Who created it. Colossians 3:10 (AMPC)

Even though we are children of God, we don’t always act like it.

Paul explains the importance of doing away with old ways of living. He instructs us to kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in you…for you have stripped off the old (unregenerate) self with its evil practices. And have clothed yourselves with the new [spiritual self, (In Colossians 3:5,9-10, AMPC). Words like “strip off” and “clothe” show that effort required on our part.

Paul doesn’t leave us hanging. He tells us exactly what to put on:

  1. Tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. (v. 12, NLT)
  2. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. (v. 13, NLT)
  3. Love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. (v. 14, NLT)
  4. Peace and thankfulness. Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. (v. 15, NLT)

As you put on these characteristics of the new you, verse 16 says, Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives (NLT). Learn God’s Word and share what you learn with others as you continue on the life-long journey of aiming to become more like Jesus.
