Storms Don’t Build

It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. Luke 6:48 (NLT)

Many of us have read Jesus’ parable about two houses. When a storm came, the house built on rock stood firm, but the one built on sand was ruined.

Notice that the storm didn’t make the first house stronger. It didn’t drive in the nails or stick on the shingles better. No, storms in life always come to destroy us!

So, we need to build our house on the rock ahead of time. The rock symbolizes Jesus and His wisdom. God’s Word is designed to help you build every area of your life. Proverbs 10:22 (NKJV) says, The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow to it.

In other words, He wants you to succeed in every aspect—marriage, family, career, mental health, and physical health!

Many of us expect things to build themselves automatically. Some husbands will say, “I’m a great provider, so my wife and I ought to have a great romance.” But talk to the wife, and you might hear another story! A good relationship is not a by-product of a good work ethic. Every individual thing you want in life needs to be built with the wisdom found in God’s Word.

Storms may come at you. When you build a boat, the water will try to sink it. Build a plane, and gravity will test it. But if you obey the laws of lift and thrust, that plane will fly wherever you want it to go. Build your life on wisdom, and you’ll have a solid foundation no matter what comes!
