Stop Identity Theft

Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous how well I know it. Psalm 139:14 (NLT)

What would you say if I asked you, “Who are you?”

You might begin by describing your physical appearance, but that is not who you are. It is just what you look like. You may describe yourself as a parent, grandparents, son or daughter but that is not who you are either. You can tell me your nationality, but that is just your background.

You might tell me about what you do for living, but your identity doesn’t come from what you do. Who you truly are runs much deeper than a job description.

How you perceive yourself strongly affects your life. If you hold negative beliefs about yourself, there is a fight going on inside your head—an attempted identity theft. You may feel that something is wrong with you or that you are hopelessly stuck in bad habits. These beliefs, if unchallenged, will limit you.

Everyone has at least one thing about them that they don’t like or something in their past that they are not proud of. Don’t focus on those negative aspects; grow past them. Win the fight against identity theft by refusing to focus on the past; focus on God’s word instead.

God says that you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). He carefully formed you in your mother’s womb (v.13) and thinks about you all the time (v.17).

Let God define who you are. He is the one who created you, after all.
