Careless words stab like a sword, but the words of wise people bring healing. Proverbs 12:18 (GW)
When I was young, kids would chant, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But that’s not true, is it? Words are incredibly potent. They can inflict pain that far outlasts any physical injury. On the other hand, they also have the power to lift someone’s spirits, melt their heart or even save their life.
Think about the words you speak daily. What are you saying about your marriage? How do you talk about your body? When you talk about your future, are your words confident and affirming or filled with uncertainty and fear?
I hear people say things like, “I’m never going to be attractive” or “I can’t do anything about my Irish temper.” Rather than verbally agreeing with thoughts of defeat, get up and declare what God says.
For example, if you wake up and think, “It’s another stinking day,” don’t verbalize it. Instead, declare, “God made today, and I’m going to rejoice and enjoy it!” You’ll be amazed what a difference this simple, everyday practice makes to your heart.
If you struggle with self-image, say, “I’m made in God’s own image, and He took great pleasure in creating me!”
When you crawl out of bed and your bones start to creak, say, “Bones, hear the Word of the Lord. You are healthy and whole, in Jesus’ name!”
Whatever the circumstance, rise up and use your words to speak His words. Declare them out loud until your heart is convinced and completely agrees with what God says. His words will never hurt you!
