Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how
far will they go among so many? John 6:9
God is in the business of using everyday people with everyday skills and resources to do incredible things. Elijah had a coat, and when he wanted to cross a river, he hit the river with that coat and the river parted. When Peter needed to pay his taxes, what did Jesus send him to do? Since he was a fisherman, Jesus told him to go fishing! The first fish he caught had a gold coin in its mouth, which covered his taxes.
When the crowds who were listening to Jesus were hungry, a little boy had a couple of fish and a few loaves of bread. That little boy was willing to let Jesus have what he had, and God used it to bless five thousand people, including the little boy!
When Paul couldn’t make the trip to pray for people, what did he
do? He had a few handkerchiefs, so he put them on his body when he preached. Then he gave them to people to bring to the sick, and when they did, those people were healed. Praying over handkerchiefs isn’t a doctrine; it just happened to be what was in Paul’s hands, and God used it!
God wants to use the family you’re in, the experiences you’ve had and the skills you’ve developed. God has entrusted you with natural abilities and resources. What you have may seem small and insignificant, but in God’s hands it can do mighty things. How can you let him use what’s in your hands?
