Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7
Yesterday we talked about the fact that self-confidence is very different from self-worth. We develop self-confidence in an area of our lives when we have experience and a good track record in that area—when we’ve become more competent at doing something. Self-worth, on theother hand, doesn’t need to be related to our performance at all.
Many times we do tie the two together. We feel that if we perform at a higher level, we’re worth more. But that’s an unstable place to get self-worth. Every time we’re put in a new situation, we’re going to lack confidence in that area. When we get our worth from God, we can always feel good about ourselves because our worth is rooted in what God says and has nothing to do with what we’re able to do.
Our worth comes from God. He determines our value!
Jesus said that God values us so much, he even knows the number of hairs on our heads. We don’t need to worry about anything! He said, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (Matthew 6:26).
Your worth is based on the unchanging Word of God, which says you’re his treasured possession (Deuteronomy 7:6), the apple of his eye (Psalm 17:8). You are of immeasurable value to God!
