…think the same way that Christ Jesus thought… Philippians 2:5 (CEV)
Jesus is our perfect example. If you want to develop the kind of character that helps to create honest, loving relationships and causes you to build a good name in your career, study His life and learn to think more like Him.
Actually, other great resources teach the fundamentals of character as well. The Josephson Institute describes six pillars of character:
- Trustworthiness. Are you reliable and loyal? Do all you can to keep your word and every promise you make.
- Respect. Do you treat others the way you want to be treated? Be courteous and accept the differences in others.
- Responsibility. Are you willing to be accountable for your actions? Always think about the (intended and unintended) consequences.
- Fairness. Do you play by the rules? When you are open minded and you really listen to people, you avoid taking advantage of people, blaming unfairly or picking favourites.
- Caring. Life isn’t just about minding your own business and not hurting anyone. It’s about helping others. Jesus was willing to go out of His way, even for one person.
- Citizenship. Do you do your share to make your community better? Nothing develops character like stepping outside your own life and doing something for the benefit of others.
Become more like Jesus. Although you won’t do it perfectly, Jesus does not condemn you if you fall short of these ideals. You can always ask God to help you set high standards for yourself.
