Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV)
How do you approach God? Do you go to Him timidly, feeling ashamed? Hebrews 4:16 says that you can go boldly to His throne. But what kind of throne is it?
If it was a throne of judgment or punishment, none of us would want to go anywhere near it. If it was a throne of standards you could never live up to, you probably wouldn’t approach it with much boldness, knowing all your mistakes and flaws.
But this is the throne of grace—the throne of God’s undeserved favour toward you.
In the Bible, we find three different thrones. Revelations 20:11-15 talks about the white throne of judgment. This is where everyone who doesn’t know Jesus will someday be judged on one thing: whether their name is written in the Book of Life. The only way to get your name written in the book is to believe in Jesus. As a believer, you won’t visit this throne.
The second throne is the judgment seat of Christ. In Greek, it’s the “bema” seat (Romans 14:10, 2 Corinthians 5:10) or seat of rewards. It’s where you will one day receive a reward for the eternal impact your life made.
Thirdly, we have the throne of grace. God’s grace is His favour and ability that comes to you as a gift because of Jesus. In any area where you’re struggling, you can come back to this throne and receive God’s supernatural ability. Don’t depend on your own abilities. Look to Jesus and what He has done for you, and learn to live at the throne of grace!
