Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (NKJV)
We’ve begun a series about the keys to walking in the authority you have in Christ. These are keys to real change, and they will help you become who you really are: a born-again, power-filled, child of God.
We’re going to talk about the second key to walking in our God-given authority: the desires of your heart. You see, desire is a powerful force that can move you either toward faith or toward temptation.
Many Christians have been taught that you should never desire anything but Jesus. Although that may sound spiritual, it’s actually not true. It’s okay to desire food. God put that desire there to keep you alive. In fact, He’s not against you having desires. He wants you to desire to improve. He wants you to desire great relationships and a successful career. Desires aren’t necessarily bad; often the issue is how you choose to meet those desires.
For example, you can desire self-worth. Just make sure you get it from God. Otherwise you might go after position, recognition or titles to meet that need. Do you know what that brings? It brings pride, because these are the wrong places to get your self-worth.
Other times, the problem is we haven’t cultivated a desire for the right things. You can begin to desire a better relationship with God and a passion for His Word, a desire to do His will and to help others know Him.
Don’t fall for the lie that all desires are bad. Just cultivate great desires and be conscious of how you’re meeting them. Then the desires of your heart will move you toward faith!
