Joy Skills: Focus on Health

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NLT)

Have you ever tried to be happy when you’re experiencing a lot of physical pain or discomfort? It’s not easy! Poor physical health creates a real drain on happiness. It’s still possible to have a deep sense of joy when you’re fighting sickness, but no one enjoys feeling badly.

Yesterday we covered the first of three things we all need to remember to focus on if we want to live joy-filled lives. Today we will discuss the second of these three: health.

While we all go through times when we feel sick and tired, it’s important to minimize these times by focusing on our health. Of course, diseases can sometimes press in at us. I’m certainly not saying that we are responsible for every illness that comes our way. We live in an imperfect world because of Adam’s original sin, which brought all kinds of negative consequences. Today I’m talking about what we do have control over. We need to look after our health the best we can.

Making healthy choices can require some sacrifice, but it’s of great benefit. According to our verse today, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. It’s been given to you to manage, so exercise, eat well and have a healthy thought-life. The healthier you are, the more energy you will have and the easier it will be to feel good.
