Jesus Or Religion?

Is it not clear to you that to go back to that old rule-keeping, peer-pleasing religion would be an abandonment of everything personal and free in my relationship with God? Galatians 2:19-21 (MSG)

During the time Jesus walked the planet, the religious leaders called Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes knew the Bible very well, but were consumed with laws and rules.

Although they believed that a Messiah was coming, they completely missed Him when He arrived. When Jesus began to heal the sick, perform miracles and teach, they were completely closed to what He had to say. Often religious beliefs are founded on tradition and not God’s Word.

If someone has a strong religious belief, they are rarely open to anything that opposes it. A truth in God’s Word could be staring them in the face, ready to set them free, and they will turn away. Why? Because when our beliefs are challenged, it doesn’t feel good.

When Jesus confronted what the religious leaders believed was true, they became increasingly angry. Many people prefer to hang on to their religious traditions even though they do not benefit them. They cling to the thought that God is unhappy with them even though it steals their joy. Some live miserable lives—all because they refuse to let go of incorrect religious beliefs that do not even serve them well. Jesus said that He came that we could have life, so if you lack joy, something may be missing in what you believe about Jesus.

Today, ask Holy Spirit to show you if you are hanging on to incorrect beliefs. Open yourself up to Jesus’ joy and peace!
