And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him]. Ephesians 4:30 (AMP)
Did you know that your words and emotional outbursts can grieve Holy Spirit? Let’s think about this. We can offend, vex and sadden Him according to the Amplified Bible.
Ephesians 4 talks about the hazards of living a life separate from Jesus. It warns against those who are perverse, empty and totally reliant on the logical reasoning of their minds (v. 17). It says many become willfully blind to the things of God—spiritually apathetic, calloused and reckless—and this leads them to indulge in every form of impurity (vv. 18–19). However, we have Jesus. We have been made new, and we need to strip ourselves of our ways and realize that we have been created in God’s image (vv. 22–24). In this new way of living, we can keep our emotions in check.
When we are angry, we can still remain in control of our actions. We don’t need to allow ourselves to speak badly of others (vv. 26– 28). Only speech that is “good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others” (v. 29) should come out of our mouths—no bitterness, indignation, rage, resentment, animosity, quarreling, slander, abusive language, malice or spite (v. 31).
Jesus empowers us to live this way. If the Bible says we should be able to be “useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave” us, that means we are empowered to do it. When you are tempted to speak words that hurt, ask for His help and He will empower you to do what’s right.
