One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!” Luke 23:39 (NLT)
As a paramedic, and then a pastor, I’ve been with many people as they breathed their last. Over the years I’ve noticed it’s rare to meet someone cynical or egotistical on their deathbed.
Yet that was the attitude of one of the two thieves crucified beside Jesus. Even approaching the end, this thief ridiculed Him. That may seem shocking. But then again, haven’t we all met people who are living in heartache or nearing death, yet still refuse to turn to God?
Now, the other criminal had a completely different attitude. He rebuked the sarcastic thief, then spoke to Jesus and acknowledged who He was. And despite the agonizing pain Jesus was enduring, He extended incredible love, acceptance and eternal life to that criminal.
But here’s a sombre thought: Jesus never said a word to the sarcastic thief. From what we can tell, He simply turned and spoke to the man whose heart was open to Him. That doesn’t mean Jesus didn’t love and die for the arrogant thief too. Of course He did, but that thief wasn’t accepting of Christ or His love, so Jesus respected his decision and let him be.
You see, Jesus gave all He could to show how much He loves you, but in the end, it’s up to you whether you open your heart and accept Him.
However, the second you do—regardless of anything you’ve ever done—Jesus is right there, ready to welcome you into His Kingdom. There is nothing He would love more!
