Therefore, since we now have been justified [declared free of the guilt of sin] by His blood, [how much more certain is it that] we will be saved from the wrath of God through Him. Romans 5:9 (AMP)
One of the worst things religion has ever done is tell people that God brings pain or heartache into their lives because they deserve it. Is that what God’s Word teaches? Not even close!
The word “justified” in today’s verse means to be made righteous as if we’d never sinned. In other words, placing our faith in Jesus’ finished work from the cross to the throne makes us right with God. It’s a mind-blowing gift we receive through Him.
Paul goes on to write that because of Jesus’ sacrifice, not only are we made right in God’s sight, but all His wrath against mankind’s sins fell upon Jesus. Jesus made a new covenant for us! Does that sound like God is against us? Or that He wants to dish out a little pain into our lives to teach a lesson? Not at all.
As a believer, Jesus took the judgement of sin for you. He bore the weight of your punishment, the curse and every sin held to your name so you wouldn’t have to. As a result, you are free to enjoy peace and a fully reconciled relationship with God.
That means He never would bring pain or hurt into your life because Christ paid for your debt in full. God has no wrath left to put on you—in fact, He’s not even angry at you (Isaiah 54:9-10). Meditate on this truth.
You’ll enjoy incredible peace the more you realize, “God isn’t coming against me. He’s for me and He loves me!”
