In Love With The Map

You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life. John 5:39–40 (NLT)

We’re way off track if we’re more interested in laws and rules than having a relationship with Jesus. That’s like falling in love with the treasure map instead of the treasure.

You see, Jesus said that we were given the Scriptures to show the way to Him. But when we only think about following the rules set out by Scripture, we forget that we have access to something so much better: We have the opportunity to have a relationship with Jesus!

Following Jesus is not only about following rules to look like you have it all together on the outside. The Pharisees had that external show all figured out. But this is what Jesus said to them, “You’re hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You’re like manicured grave plots, grass clipped and the flowers bright, but six feet down it’s all rotting bones and worm-eaten flesh. People look at you and think you’re saints, but beneath the skin you’re total frauds” (Matthew 23:27–28).

A relationship with Jesus is what the Christian life is all about. I’m not saying that Biblical laws and principles are useless. They are filled with wisdom and can help you to live a great life. But rules and principles are secondary to your relationship with Jesus. Besides, you need Jesus to follow those laws and principles. You actually don’t have the ability to follow His laws without getting to know Him and being filled with the power that Holy Spirit provides.

Learn Biblical laws and principles, but never forget that a relationship with Jesus is the treasure you’re searching for.
