And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart Galatians 6:9 (NKJV)
When you think of motivation, you may conjure up visions of a motivational speaker jumping all over the stage or a giggly person who refuses to look at problems. Actually, motivation isn’t an outward expression or an emotional feeling; it’s something deeper. Often motivation simply shows itself as quiet determination. It’s refusing to give up.
Internal motivation is a daily choice. On the other hand, there are several things that can kill motivation quickly. Yesterday we covered two and today we will discuss two more:
- A negative mental attitude.
Don’t allow yourself to daydream on the ‘what ifs.’ If you spend your day imagining the worst-case scenario, you will not maintain motivation. Protect your positive mental attitude. Spend energy on things that are important and don’t let your mind take you into negative daydreams.
- Excessive dependence on external factors.
You cannot depend on others for your motivation. Some depend on their spouse to be up all the time. If their spouse isn’t happy, they can’t be happy either. I understand that we are affected by the emotions of those around us; however, God is our source, not people. We also cannot depend on circumstances, money or success to be our motivators in life.
Stay in faith. Don’t let others deflate you. Refuse to let your situation determine your motivation. Believe that God is with you and kick down doors until you have success.
