For I hold you by your right hand—I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, “Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.” Isaiah 41:13 (NLT)
Yesterday we talked about how sometimes it’s necessary to go through an uncomfortable season to grow. Today I want to talk about something similar: feeling incompetent.
Most of us don’t like straying outside our comfort zones. Yet without discomfort, God can’t move us somewhere new, because each level of growth takes us from competence to incompetence. The great news is, incompetence becomes competence when you grow and push past it!
I have four daughters and a wife who all love shopping, and whenever they would ask for my opinion on what they were trying on, I felt incompetent. One day I realized I had two choices: dread these shopping trips for the rest of my life or grow! I started studying style magazines, learning about colour families and coordinating outfits. A while later, I was at the mall with my daughters, giving capable answers about what they were trying on, when other women in the store started coming and asking me questions about their outfits. They thought I worked there!
You see, I discovered that I could overcome where I felt uncomfortable and incompetent.
Wherever you’re seeking change, realize that a season of discomfort and incompetence is completely normal. But if you apply yourself, you can grow to become comfortable and competent in that area.
Don’t let feelings of fear or pride stop you from growing in your relationships or trying something new. It’s the only way to see growth and change, and you’re not alone. Holy Spirit is within you as a believer, helping you every step of the way!
