GROWING PAST THE BABY STAGE

But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.  Psalm 1:2 (NLT)

While it doesn’t always come naturally or easily for everyone, one of the main ways we grow from baby Christians into mature believers is by meditating on God’s Word. That’s why I’m surprised to meet believers who have no desire for it, because growing in the Word is so incredibly life-changing.

Psalm 1:1-3 even ties blessings and benefits to those who desire to get into the Word. So how do we develop a passion for it?

In Psalm 119:103 (NLT), David said, “How sweet your words taste to me.” He spoke the Word and spent time chewing on it. And the more he reflected on God’s goodness, faithfulness and promises, the more it caused him to delight in God’s Word. It refreshed him and brought him hope and encouragement. Through it, he discovered a continual feast of guidance, comfort, wisdom and peace. (See Psalm 119:98, 37:23, 56:4.) Who wouldn’t want to plug in and enjoy benefits like those in their lives every day?

Even if your passion for studying is low right now, there are many ways to grow in the Word. Try reading different translations of the Bible or seeking out good teaching podcasts or audiobooks to listen to. You can also check out life-giving shows online or on TV that feed your spirit, or dig into Bible study tool websites or books that explain the Word.

I understand that it takes an unbelievable drive to put God’s Word first and spend time in it, but refuse to plateau. Discipline yourself to get into the Word daily and speak it over your life so that you keep moving forward, growing and improving. The reward is well worth it!
