The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. You won’t be able to say ‘Here it is,’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you. Luke 17:20–21 (NLT)
Throughout history, religious wars have been fought over what was deemed to be holy. Sacred temples, relics and holy grounds were defended at all costs. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who have been slaughtered over the years in the name of religion, and that includes religious Christianity.
It’s sad because Christianity is not even about buildings, relics or holy ground. Jesus’ kingdom isn’t political, and it isn’t a geographical territory. Jesus came to deal with our internal world—the hearts of mankind.
When Jesus told us to put His kingdom first (Matthew 6:33), He was talking about an internal work in our lives, not an external one. You can’t see Jesus’ kingdom with your physical eyes because it’s within each believer. This is where His work takes place—in your heart. This is where He speaks to you in a still, small voice, giving you a sense of peace about one direction or an impression to go another.
Your heart is where you hold your deepest beliefs about who you are. When your heart becomes full of God’s love and His Word, His power and presence flow from your life. Everything you need begins to come together when your heart’s beliefs line up with His.
When it comes to your faith in Jesus, the important work is taking place inside you. You hold the keys to His kingdom. Keep studying and meditating on His Word so it can change your beliefs. Make it a priority. Always put that internal work first.
