We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. 2 Corinthians 4:7 (NLT)
As a young pastor, I was invited to speak at a successful men’s conference. Many of the other speakers were men whose books and messages had changed my life in a powerful way. I couldn’t think of anything better than getting a chance to sit with them and ask them questions.
But when I met several of these men in the conference green room, my awe quickly faded. I found that they didn’t live up to the glowing picture I had of them. I remember thinking to myself, “Well, this gentleman sounds a little arrogant. And the guy over there could treat his family better than that.” How could they be such incredible teachers of the Word, yet exhibit such human flaws?
In the middle of my disappointment, I realized something. God doesn’t use us because we are perfect. He uses us because of what Jesus has done in our lives. And you know what? The more I got to know these men, I discovered a newfound respect for them. I recognized that what had ministered to me wasn’t them—it was the gift of Jesus within them. God uses us even though we are imperfect vessels to make a powerful impact for the Kingdom!
If you’ve been weighed down by guilt and condemnation, thinking God could never use someone like you, be encouraged! All throughout history—from the earliest accounts in the Bible until today—God has been working through imperfect people. He’s not limited by your flaws. He wants to do something amazing in and through you!
