However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:13 (NKJV)
Sometimes the way we communicate can be misleading. For example, I’ve heard people say, “The Lord told me to give you a call.” They make it sound like they heard an audible voice, when that’s not what actually happened.
Don’t be discouraged if you’ve never heard the audible voice of God. I’ve met several world-renowned Christian leaders, yet only a couple of them have ever heard God speak out loud (and it was only one time). Personally, it has never happened to me, and yet I “hear” from God every day. God speaks to me in my heart.
If you’ve accepted Christ, God’s Spirit speaks to you internally through subtle impressions, gut feelings, His Word, and dreams and desires. Of course, if a dream or desire is from God, it’s going to somehow bring glory to Him. I don’t mean it has to be obviously “Christian.” God doesn’t just give us dreams for church plants and missions. He could give you a dream to have a music career, and it doesn’t even mean that your music has to be Christian music. But that dream will have the potential to bring glory to God.
Remember, no dream is too big or too small to be from God! And don’t worry if you can’t think of anything to dream about. God has given you plenty of ideas in His Word!
Start by dreaming of God’s promises. As you continue to grow in His Word and live your life with Him, you’ll walk out the dreams He has for you.
