Jashobeam the Hacmonite, who was leader of the Three—the three mightiest warriors among David’s men. He once used his spear to kill 800 enemy warriors in a single battle. 2 Samuel 23:8 (NLT)

King David was a great Israeli king who surrounded himself with people of courage and strength. Several hundred skilled warriors, referred to as his Mighty Men, were attracted to his leadership long before he ever became king of Israel. In particular, II Samuel 23:8-12 mentions the Three, his highest ranked warriors chosen for their character and amazing acts of bravery.

We can learn a lot about the kind of people we can become by looking at these three men. Today we will look at the first.

Josheb-Basshebeth, the leader of David’s top three mighty men, killed 800 enemies in one encounter. He stationed himself at a post and maintained the resolve and persistence to stand his ground until the end. In brutal battle, he remained completely focused. Nothing could deter him from the cause at hand.

Is anything distracting you from your cause? Life is not fair. There is no pause button; we simply need to keep going, no matter how tough it gets, and complaining and blaming only distracts us from our purpose here on earth. If we keep our eyes lifted up to God and get our focus off our needs and wants, we can remain focused on Jesus and His cause: bringing others into relationship with Him.

Are you easily distracted? Or are you resolved, persistent and focused on Jesus’ cause?
