Don’t Starve; Feed Yourself

But he answered, “it is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” Matthew 4:4 (ESV)

We are responsible for our own spiritual sustenance. Church is a beautiful place to come every week to hear from someone who knows the Word, who can teach and instruct you. But even a great church is not enough.

You need to feed yourself every day. A great devotional can’t do it all for you either. It’s up to you to interact with what you’re learning.

When I do devotions, I ask God to reveal things to me. Sometimes I read the same verse over and over so I can really absorb what it says. Let’s try it today.

Read Philippians 4:3, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (NKJV). Pay attention to the wording. It doesn’t say that you should wait for God to do things for you. It says that you can do it. Do what? All things! He’ll strengthen you today, in all that you do.

What are you facing right now? You can get through it because you have Jesus’ strength. As you continue to think about the verse and apply it to your life, Holy Spirit brings the “Ah ha” revelation that changes the way you think.

That’s what Holy Spirit’s job is. He guides you by revealing His word to your heart. He helps you in every area of life—relationships, work, finances—by revealing God’s word to you. As you spend time reading or hearing God’s Word, He brings revelation.

Feed yourself with God’s Word every day. Develop the habit of internalizing His Word and you’ll become spiritually strong.
