Do You Spend Time With Holy Spirit?

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.2 Corinthians 13:14 (NKJV)

We’ve been discussing Holy Spirit over the past few days, learning about Him and what He can bring into our lives. Yesterday we covered one way you can train yourself to hear from Him: by meditating on God’s Word and asking Holy Spirit to instruct you. Today we will discuss a second way:

Develop an intimate friendship with Holy Spirit.

  1. Spend time with Holy Spirit. You get to know Holy Spirit much the same way that you get to know any person. Ask His opinion. Tell Him how you feel. Have a dialogue, not a monologue. Talk to Him when things go right and when they go wrong.
  2. Practice listening. Do you tell Holy Spirit what you want Him to do? That’s fine, but make sure you are also asking Him what He would like you to do each day.
  3. Test things out if you think He may be speaking to you. If someone repeatedly comes to your mind, give them a call. Don’t be weird about it, just say “You’ve been on my mind today,” and see what they say. When someone stands out to you, ask Him what to do. You may sense that you should pray or you might feel the need to strike up a conversation.

Holy Spirit may not give you a massive revelation about someone every day, but just keep practicing. Examine how it felt when you heard from Him and soon you will learn to accurately discern when you are hearing from Holy Spirit.
