Coming Home

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
Romans 8:14

Like many others, my job keeps me from home a fair bit. Whether it’s training pastors or speaking at conferences, a big chunk of my year is spent on the road, at airports and in hotels.

The best part about being away is coming home.

There’s a certain feeling I get when I walk through my front door. It doesn’t matter what we do—eat dinner together, hang out, laugh, talk, or watch a movie—I’m relaxed and content to be with my family again.

Spending time with God is like that, too. When I spend time in his presence—reading my Bible, meditating or praying—a calm, peaceful, contented feeling washes over me. There’s also a restlessness I sense when I don’t spend time with God, much like how I feel after being away from home for days on end. In order to feel grounded and at peace each day, it’s crucial that I spend time with God.

I’ve also learned not to make major decisions until I’ve received his guidance. Personally, I’ve never heard the audible voice of God. Yet, I’ve learned to recognize his voice that speaks in silent ways. For me, it often comes as a strong gut feeling or intuition—a confidence that tells me I’m on the right track.

There are so many voices clamouring for our attention that it’s easy to disconnect from God. But when you spend time in quiet meditation on his Word each day, you become sensitive to his voice and direction.

Regardless of whether you’re at home or half way around the world, make time today to come home to your Father God.
