Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Psalm 91:1–2

Over the next few days, we’re going to unpack Psalm 91, because once you understand what it promises you, it’ll change your life.

Verse 1 begins by showing us that we need to place ourselves in God’s protection and blessing.

If you want to be in someone’s shadow, you have to get close to them. So if you want to be in God’s shadow and dwell in his shelter, get to know God. It’s not that you’re trying to earn the right to be next to him. You have that right in Christ, so it simply means to move closer to him by reading his Word to discover his character and values.

Notice how the second verse begins. It says, “I will say of the Lord.” This is important. It doesn’t say, “I will think,” or “I will believe of the Lord.” Thinking and believing are important too, but this verse brings out the power of our words.

Why do you need to say that God is your refuge, your fortress, your God in whom you trust? It’s not because God forgot it or he’s reluctant. No! As you speak God’s Word out loud, you deal with fear and misbeliefs. You establish the Word deep in your heart.

And when your heart begins to become established in the Word, faith rises and miracles happen.

Living under God’s protection is simple. Just keep getting to know him and speak his promises of protection and provision over your life. Say, “You are my refuge and fortress, Father. I’m safe in your protection!”
