TALK ABOUT THE HARD THINGS

Leon FontaineDevoted

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me… For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9–10 (NKJV)  When it comes to marriage, I find that most men want two things: they want a best friend in their wife, and they want a warm, wonderful sex life with her. But these are also two areas where men struggle.  Let me speak to the wives first. This may be hard to hear, but you can’t change your husband. I know you’re brilliant at improving things, especially in relationships—but your husband is a free-will being. Instead of …

FATHER TO THE FATHERLESS

Leon FontaineDevoted

The God who is in his holy dwelling place is the father of the fatherless and the defender of widows. Psalm 68:5 (GW)  Going by statistics alone, North America is in a crisis of fatherhood. A 2021 report by the US Census Bureau stated that 18.4 million children live in fatherless households. That doesn’t even begin to describe those whose fathers are present in body but absent in spirit.  Speaking to men, chances are you want to be different than the generation before you, but you’ve probably been ripped off at some point. Maybe your father was absent, distant or even abusive. Or maybe you had a great dad, but there were still areas where he fell short.  The good news is that God is the Father of the …

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore.” Ecclesiastes 12:1 (NLT)  Men, what are you chasing in life? Some men work eighty-hour weeks to earn a promotion. Some throw all their energy into sports or some other hobby. Others think if only their marriage was more exciting, everything would be fine.  Financial success, hobbies and a thriving marriage are all great things. The trouble is, if you hang your happiness on them, you’ll remain stuck. Sadly, it takes many people decades to figure this out. When they’re old and grey, they look back with regret and realize they got it all wrong.  Ecclesiastes 12 cautions us …

THREE INGREDIENTS OF FATHERHOOD

Leon FontaineDevoted

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)  When it comes to fathering your kids, there are three crucial ingredients: teaching, example and affection.  Teaching is the obvious one, and today’s verse shows the value of training your children in the way they should go.  But even more powerful than what you teach them is the example you set. Dads, your kids are watching how you handle bad times and how you treat people. They’re paying attention to what matters to you. You can teach them all the Bible you want, but it doesn’t mean much until they see you modelling it every day.  Affection is the third ingredient, and it’s the …

THE FOUNDATION OF FATHERHOOD

Leon FontaineDevoted

“And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:18 (NLT)  With Father’s Day coming up, I want to dedicate some time to talking to the men.  I’ve found that almost every father wants the same things: a sense of purpose; a warm and lively sex life with his wife; and a job with meaning, not just good pay. He wants to secure a great future for his kids. He wants to be able to let loose and have fun with his family—and still know that his wife and children are proud of him.   The problem is most men haven’t had anyone to model real manhood to them. There hasn’t been a real fathering of the …
