REAL FATHERHOOD

Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Romans 12:9–10 (NLT)  Men are taught not to sweat it or shed a tear. They often put on an emotional mask in the morning and take it off at night. The trouble is these fathers are teaching their kids—especially their sons—to do the same.  Men, we need to learn to take off our masks and be vulnerable with someone. What do I mean by that? You need to open up and be honest with your wife even if you don’t think she’ll understand you. Have genuine conversations with your kids even if they may …

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A FATHER?

Leon FontaineDevoted

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand. Psalm 37:23–24 (NKJV)  Today is Father’s Day, and I want to ask: What does fatherhood mean you? Is it providing your kids with a nice house, a good school and a car when they turn sixteen? To me, that’s being their banker, not their father.  Being a father is about pouring thousands of hours into your relationship with your kids. It’s about taking time to get to know them, teach them and show them how to live by example. Maybe you didn’t have the best father figure growing up, but you can …

CONTAGIOUS PASSION

Passion for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. Psalm 69:9 (NLT)  Today I want to share a word of caution with men. Some of us treat church as if it’s just another business. We like to “review” pastors and churches, writing them off and judging them if they fall short in our eyes.  Ezekiel 34:18-19 says not to trample the grass and muddy the water that belongs to the flock, and Psalm 105:15 (NKJV) also says, “Do not touch My anointed ones, and do My prophets no harm.”  I make an effort to never drag down another pastor. We may not agree on everything, but I will learn what I can from them and refrain …

FIRE IN HIS EYES

Leon FontaineDevoted

His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire… He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance. Revelation 1:14,16 (NLT)  I often tell men we need a new look at Jesus. Most illustrations show Him with flowing hair and a soft, serene expression. Churches have feminized Jesus to the point that we struggle to imagine Him getting fired up about anything. But read the Gospels and you’ll see a Jesus full of zeal and purpose!  My favourite description of Him is found in Revelation 1. It describes Jesus with hair as white as wool, …

JOY: A DAD’S SUPERPOWER

Leon FontaineDevoted

A joy-filled heart is curative balm, but a broken spirit hurts all the way to the bone. Proverbs 17:22 (VOICE)  When it comes to being a godly man and a great father, you can’t make it on your own. God didn’t design your spirit man to operate devoid of His presence, but to be filled with His Spirit.  On your own, the only scrap of peace you get is when you manage to control everything around you—and how often does that happen? But when your spirit man ignites with the presence of God, you experience a peace so deep that in the midst of enemies coming against you, you experience a feast of peace and joy (Psalm 23:5).  You know, there’s something about laughter that brings …
