Fed by the Word

Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 (NLT) Physical hunger is easy to fix. But when you’re hungry for love, peace of mind or a sense of significance, where do you turn? Well, if your body needs regular meals, your heart needs to be fed too. In today’s verse, Jesus compares Himself to bread. We also know from John chapter 1 that Jesus is called the Word of God. Jeremiah 15:16 (NLT) paints a vivid picture of this: “When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight.” What does it really mean to eat or “devour” the Word? It …

Speak It and See It

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8 (NKJV) Unless you continually declare your beliefs, you’ll find the culture and negativity of this world seeping into you like a marinade. Thankfully, today’s verse describes one of the best remedies: meditative prayer. It says God’s Word “shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night.” Now, it doesn’t mean speaking verses like a hex—it’s not about saying the right words a certain way to conjure a result. …

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) Every human being is wired by God to succeed in life and walk in incredible joy, peace and love. But most people have been programmed for unbelief, sickness and heartache. Somewhere along the way, the world has got each of us thinking wrong ways and believing wrong things. So, how do you reprogram your heart? It comes down to your words. I’ve noticed that people who continually talk about something usually experience more of that thing. As a paramedic, there were a few patients who came in so often that the staff came to know them by name. These people always talked about …

Train Your Heart

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 (NKJV) As a young paramedic, I found myself in horrifying situations almost daily—surrounded by the sights, smells and sounds of the hurt and dying. Within my first year of dealing with this stuff, I started to become burnt out and hard-hearted. I knew something had to change. I had to figure out how to strengthen myself and bring God’s power to those suffering all around me. So I worked out a training program for myself. Every morning before work, I would listen to a message from God’s Word. As I filled my heart with His promises, I began speaking them out loud. I would declare things like, “When I lay …

Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4 (ESV) The Israelites spent over 400 years in slavery before they finally reached the edge of their Promised Land. God had promised them a fertile land that they could call their own. But when they sized up the people they would have to fight to claim that land, the majority of the Israelites backed down. They just couldn’t envision themselves succeeding. Although God promised them the land, they couldn’t claim it because they didn’t believe they could. Instead, the majority lived out the rest of their days in the desert wilderness. Only those twenty and younger went …
