CALLED TO BARELY GET BY?

For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield. Psalm 5:12 (NKJV)

Do you have trouble believing that God’s incredible favour is on your life?

Some old hymns are great, but others leave the wrong impression. For example, I remember singing one that went like this: “I’m satisfied with just a cottage below, a little silver and a little gold, but in that city where the ransomed will shine, I want a gold one that’s silver-lined.” Another went something like this: “Showers of blessing, showers of blessing we need. Mercy drops round us are falling, but for the showers we plead.”

The problem with songs like this is they imply that we’re to be satisfied with living a defeated life. We’re just to plead for blessings and mercy, which are assumed to be scarce, and we can only expect to just barely get by. We’re to hold the fort and wait for heaven, because we’re destined to live difficult lives in this world of woe. How depressing!

Where is the trust in God’s favour in these hymns? It’s time to start believing who you are: highly favoured of God!

You will still have trouble from time to time. Storms will blow and sometimes people won’t like you. But even when everything seems to be coming against you, don’t lose hope. You are blessed and highly favoured!

You may feel pulled back, but think of it like a slingshot. You’re ready to be launched into a great future! Keep believing that God is with you, that His favour is on you and that He is empowering you to overcome every problem you face.

After all, you have been qualified by Jesus for radical, incredible, overwhelming, blow-your-mind blessing!
