Build A Good Name

Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold. Proverbs 22:1 (NLT)

Proverbs 22:1 is as relevant today as it was centuries ago. It still holds true that a good reputation attracts quality people and opportunities into your life like nothing else.

There is only one way to build and keep a good name, and that is through the development of character. Character isn’t something you are born with. It’s something you develop as you learn and grow through the seasons of life, and often reflects the standards you set for yourself. For example, when you set a standard to live with honesty and you choose to conduct yourself in ways that improve the lives of others, you develop character.

In our confusing world of double standards and shades of grey, if you are having trouble setting standards that will lead to a solid character, look at Jesus’ life. He is our perfect example. All through the Gospels we hear about His compassion, mercy and forgiveness. He was selfless, loved to serve and was completely submitted to God’s will in His life. He lived with purpose and passion. He was a confident, strong leader and yet He was a caring, honest and patient friend.

I could go on and on about the characteristics of Jesus. Actually, we could study His character our entire lives and still not come to the end of how amazing He is. Yet, as incredible as it may seem, we have the potential to have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Take your cues from Jesus and you will become more like Him each day.
