But David said, “No, my brothers! Don’t be selfish with what the Lord has given us. He has kept us safe and helped us defeat the band of raiders that attacked us.1 Samuel 30:23 (NLT)

When David and his men set out to fight an enemy army and win back their stolen wives and children, they set out with 600 men, but only 400 had the strength to carry on.

Sometimes people go through a season where they legitimately cannot help. They may be fighting a physical illness, dealing with family issues or struggling with emotional problems. It is crucial that we do not resent or look down our noses at those who are going through hard times. We must have arms that wrap around those who are struggling.

When David and his men returned to the 200 who stayed behind, a few mean-spirited men spoke up. They did not want to share the wealth they had gained in battle with those who did not fight. But David insisted that they share the wealth with everyone.

If you are working hard at growing your church, do not resent those who cannot help. Let them be blessed in their attachments to you as you give sacrificially of your time, effort and money to further the cause.

Be happy that when you lead God’s way, everyone around you gets blessed. Because you serve God, your family is blessed. The company you work for is also blessed.

Do not worry about what is fair! Just be generous and trust that you cannot out-give God!
