For it is written: “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully.”
Luke 4:10
Isn’t it incredible to think that God has commissioned his angels to protect us, his people? In fact, angels have always fought to protect God’s people.
In one Old Testament story, God’s people had been called to go out and fight, under David’s leadership. The instructions David received from God were very specific: wait until you hear the sound of marching in the leaves of the trees. Only then would David’s army know that God’s army of angels had gone out before them to defeat their enemies (2 Samuel 5:24). And angels still protect us today!
These angels are under God’s command, but I want to clear up a misconception today. This doesn’t mean that angels are controlled by God. Angels have the freedom to decide whether or not they will obey God. We know this because Satan is a fallen angel named Lucifer who made the decision to try to overtake the throne, and he convinced a third of God’s angels to band with him. Angels have a choice.
Another misconception is that the angels who serve God and those who serve Satan are at war with each other. Nothing in the Bible says that. Jesus defeated Satan, and at the end of this age when his time is up, the Bible says that one angel will lock him up. There is no giant cosmic war happening in the heavens.
The only important thing you need to focus on is the fact that God’s angels have been commissioned to serve and protect God’s people—that’s all of us who follow Christ. And when you claim God’s promises, God’s angels go to work on your behalf. God is so good!
