An Essential Part Of Prayer

Leon FontaineDevoted

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. Matthew 12:35 (NKJV)

We often think that prayer is just asking God for what we want. While this certainly is a part of it, that’s not all that prayer is. Prayer also involves communicating with God, as well as speaking the promises audibly—those things that He has promised us.

Why is this audible claiming of God’s promises so powerful? Because of how it affects our hearts. Today’s verse says that out of the good treasure in our hearts, we bring forth good things. In other words, when we claim God’s promises by declaring them out loud, we are convincing our hearts of the truth. The more our hearts become convinced of the truth, the more we will bring forth that truth into our lives.

When today’s verse talks about evil, by the way, it’s not saying that if you don’t have faith, you’re evil. The thing is, when we haven’t deposited God’s truth in our lives, our beliefs tend to become negative and destructive. These rise up to stop the blessings of God and allow in hurt and heartache, which is why we need to keep meditating on and claim God’s Word to counteract this tendency.

Maybe you’ve been struggling to feel right and are experiencing depression, anxiety or some other mood disorder. There’s hope! Seek out the advice of experts and do your own research, but at the same time, make sure you are claiming God’s promises of peace, joy and health. Keep planting these promises as treasure into your heart. God’s Word is incorruptible seed and it will bring forth all sorts of good things that He has promised!
