A Specific Purpose In Life

I will cry to God Most High, Who performs on my behalf and rewards me [Who brings to pass His purposes for me and surely completes them]! Psalm 57:2 (AMPC)

God planted a desire within you to live a life of purpose. Actually, He wants you to fulfill two types of purpose in your life.

Today we’ll discuss the first one: your specific purpose, which involves your individual gifts and abilities. Holy Spirit leads you to do things in life, and you can trust Him. He won’t lead you to an area you’re going to hate or one where you’re destined to fail.

For example, God won’t lead you to be a drummer if you have no rhythm or lead you to become a surgeon if you have no interest in medicine. Also, He won’t limit you to just one thing. Actually, He has placed more gifts within you than you will ever discover in this lifetime.

Your specific purpose also pertains to the role you play in your local church. You may be a doctor or lawyer but love to help out in kids’ church, for example. Your church needs you to fulfill your specific purpose, just as a healthy body needs every part functioning as it was designed (1 Corinthians 12:12–31).

These specific purposes are something you discover step by step, day by day. As you listen to Holy Spirit to grow in your knowledge of His Word and who Jesus is, you’ll discover who you are. You’ll try different things, and will discover your personal likes, dislikes and passions.

Over time, you’ll play different parts in the grand scheme of things. Have fun with it! And although you’ll still have tough days, you will enjoy the amazing feeling that comes from knowing that God is using you in a special way.
